Ovalites 5, 15 and 25 years ago

Monday 26 May 1986Dulwich:  MARLBOROUGH 1870 lost to SURREY OVALITES by 54 runs SURREY OVALITES 119-9 dec (47 overs) Payne 33*, Keene 20 MARLBOROUGH 1870 65 all out (34.1 overs) Orriss 5-21, Packwood 2-25 Team:  Buster Cox, +Dave Evemy, John Whitehead, Barry Bristow, Bob Orriss, Mark Squire, Tony Leach, Tom Athayde, *Chris Keene, Chris Payne, Tony Packwood   After drawing the first match of the season, Ovalites lost the next three, being bowled out for 54, 49 and then just 13 by Goresbrook.  The next day, a Bank Holiday, Ovalites travelled to Dulwich, and won the toss.  Courageously, Keeners elected to bat, but at 64-8 the decision looked foolish.  However, Chris Payne played one of the best innings of his career, striking 33* from no. 10, and the skipper joined in with 20, including surely the lowest ever six, which barely got five feet off the ground but carried over square leg.  When Keeners went at 97-9, Packers (1*) continued to support Thelston in an unbroken last wicket stand of 18 before Ovalites had the luxury of declaring.   After an early run-out, Bob Orriss's pace took 5-21 in an 11 over spell (4 clean bowled) to see Marlborough in tatters at 48-6.  The home side attempted to defend for a draw but the Ovalites spin trio of Packwood, Keene and Squire took over the bowling, and Packers took the match-winning wicket with 17 balls to spare.  The improvement in fortunes continued the following week, as Goresbrook were beaten by 70 runs after Ovalites notched 152-7 dec.

Sunday 19 May 1996West Wickham:  EDEN PARK beat SURREY OVALITES by 3 wicketsSURREY OVALITES 166-3 dec (39 overs) Bristow 80, Adams 38, Mierzynski 24EDEN PARK 172-7 (40.1 overs) Kerrigan 3-35, Mudie 2-33Team:  Richard Adams, Barry Bristow, Gerald Mierzynski, Andrew Wilkes, Buster Cox, Bryan Goold, Aubrey Kerrigan, *+Dave Evemy, Glenn McLeod, Paul Mudie, Tony Packwood. Ovalites visited what was then Eden Park's home ground for the fourth game of the season.  An assured batting effort opened with a partnership of 82 between Richard Adams and Barry Bristow, with Biffa going on to an excellent 80 in 144 minutes.  Ziggy added a brisk 24 before Dave Evemy declared at 4.30.

Opening bowlers Paul (George) Mudie and Glenn McLeod reduced Eden Park to 37-3, but runs were coming at the required rate of around 4 per over.  Medium pacer Aubrey Kerrigan took 3 wickets in quick succession to make the score 112-7 with 13 overs left, but Packers couldn't make the breakthrough.  Richard Adams came on and bowled three overs for just 4, but Park drew level with 7 balls left and with the first ball of the final over Coppard cleared the boundary to clinch the victory.

Sunday 7 May 2006Esher:  CHADWICK drew with SURREY OVALITES (rain)SURREY OVALITES 176-7 (40 overs) Cole 54, Ben Wilkes 26, Keene 25CHADWICK 100-4 (28 overs) Keene 3-26Team:  +Dave Evemy, Chris Keene, Ben Wilkes, Dave Cole, Andrew Wilkes, John McLeod, Karl Walker, Danny O'Sullivan, Glenn McLeod, *Bob Welsh, John Moran.   We travelled to play our longest standing fixture (Chadwick were our fourth ever opponents, back in 1982) with a relatively weak side, and having lost by 7 wickets the previous week, but Dave Evemy and Chris Keene opened with 47 in 15 overs to establish a base.  Ben Wilkes and Dave Cole then put on 80 for the 3rd wicket, and with 14 from John McLeod and 13* from Dapper, batting at 8, Ovalites' 176-7 from 40 overs looked a par score.   Glenn and Dapper opened, and Dapper took a wicket with his sixth ball to rock the home side.  Keeners came on first change and took quick wickets to swing the balance in Ovalites' favour at 74 for 4 after 22 overs, but when the rain that had got steadily heavier became a downpour, Chadwick required 77 off 12 overs with 6 wickets left, almost exactly a run a ball.  It soon became apparent that there would be no chance of a resumption, so we retired early to the nearby pub.
